The Leiden Choirbooks Volume 1
The first choirbook, compiled in 1549, contains a remarkable number of works by Thomas Crecquillon, all written in his skilfully rich, firm style. The unknown composer Joachimus de Monte is also well represented in a number of sparkling, festive pieces.
The Egidius College has recorded two of the four masses from the first choirbook. The four-part Mass by the ‘godfather’ of Habsburg polyphonic music, Nicolas Gombert, is rich, profound and beautiful, containing endlessly interlocking lines and motifs. The monumental six-part Mass Sancta Maria, handed down anonymously, is an impressive masterpiece and a stunning crowning star of both the choirbook and the CD.
